Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but beneath Together lies a intense examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
