One extended journey around the Land Down Under has been cancelled days after the death of an elderly female passenger who was left behind by the ship on a distant island.

The passenger had been hiking on the remote island with other travelers from the vessel, but parted ways from the party for a rest. The vessel left without her and returned several hours later after the ship staff discovered the woman was unaccounted for.

A major search operation found her body the next day.

Officials are examining the tragedy, alongside law enforcement and the medical examiner.

Chief Executive of the voyage organizer said that guests and staff on the Coral Adventurer were told that the remainder of the journey had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and previous technical problems".

Via official communication, he added that passengers would be issued a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the passengers via chartered flights".

Regulatory bodies also released an updated statement, and said they had "issued a directive to the Commander" banning any further travelers from entering the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would visit the vessel in the Australian city upon its return.

Chronology of Incidents

The ship initially left the coastal city on the 24th of October, and was only 48 hours into the expedition at the time of the 80-year-old's passing. Lizard Island was the opening port on the journey.

Guests on the vessel - who typically pay substantial amounts of currency to take part in the expedition - were taken there for a shore visit with the option of walking or snorkelling.

Family Reaction

The offspring of the victim said that her family was "surprised and distressed that the vessel left the location after an organised tour without my mother".

Via her announcement, she described her mother as an "active 80-year-old" who was a affiliate of a bushwalking club.

"According to scant facts we have been provided, it looks that there was a failure of attention and ordinary reasoning," she stated.

She continued that she hoped the examination would be able to identify what "the company should have undertaken that might have protected Mum's existence".

"We understand from the police that it was a very hot day, and she became unwell on the mountain ascent," she explained.

"Officials suggested her to head down, without accompaniment. Then the vessel sailed away, seemingly without conducting a headcount.

"At a certain moment in that process, or soon after, she succumbed, by herself."

Operator Response

In a statement, the CEO verified that the operator was "cooperating fully with investigators to aid their examination".

He said that the company was "very regretful that this has transpired" and had provided its full support to the family.

Cruise Industry Procedures

The vessel accommodates up to one hundred twenty travelers with forty-six staff, according to official details. It was specially constructed to access isolated locations of Australia's coastline and is equipped with "small boats" - small boats used to take passengers on day excursions.

Events of this nature are uncommon, and cruise ships have protocols to record which travelers are boarding or disembarking, according to industry experts.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] on the ship just isn't an possibility," a specialist stated.

Vessel operators take these processes extremely carefully and have "sophisticated systems in place to stop such events from taking place," the expert further stated.

"This is presumably a stunning - and tragic - isolated incident."
