No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
